Personal background

Since I first heard about this project on a television spot with CNET

Since I first heard about this project on a
television spot with CNET-TV I had to join in... The SETI project is an
intriguing concept for a rather daunting computer task.  My hats off to the
scientists who work on this project.  They are looking for the proverbial
grain of salt on an endless sandy beach.

Putting on my professional hat: I am an
MIS manager with 11 years experience with computers.  I run a small
corporate network for a manufacturing company.  Living in the Poconos with
my wife (Marlene), I spend many hours gazing up at the stars (mainly while
walking the dog at 3:00am) in the freezing winter (winter REALLY IS a good time
to star gaze).

I am an MCSE, with a BS in Electrical/Electronics
Engineering with a minor in Physics... I DO have a long term goal of going back
to pick up more physics (I just don't have the math smarts).

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

1. Well there is NO question extraterrestrial life exists... Bacteria will be abundant... What about Intelligent ETs? They will prove to be difficult to find... but I still think that will all the billions upon billions of stars/systems that I would truly be sadened if it was just us. Should we discover "SMART-ET" we should embrace them... Certainly many light years of travel would prevent any kind of "we're coming to take over Earth" scenarios of SCI-FI lore. In this event, benefits would far outweigh the detriment.

2. Should we tranmit a beacon? Yes! BTW what is the square box that brings me 500 channels of junk? Oh yeah TV. That'll do... they might as well see us at our worst. OH and wasn't there a spacecraft (crude as it was), that had this platinum LP on it describing US and containing a rudimentary lingual code... OH yeah VOYAGER! We have done this communications thing before folks, lets expand who it reaches!

3. I run SETI@home to help the SETI project in any way I can. Theres is an otherwise thankless job, whose potential is enormous, but whose patience need be endless. Any help I can be to cut down on the need for patience in finding "SMART-ET" then so be it.
