Personal background |
I love discourse, especially regarding philosophy, politics, religion. I love reading and thinking, and I'm currently deep into the 1791 Emendations, as I prefer to name the first ten amendments to the Constitution. To emend is to free from harm; not only the framers, but the citizenry at large, insisted on their inclusion before they would assent to the 1789 Constitution and submit to its authority.
I particularly admire Emendations 1 and 9; where is there a defender of my unenumerated rights? Are you out there? I suppose that if I prayed, I'd pray to that defender. Instead, I must follow the Socratic tradition of the reflective, slightly disgruntled citizen and assume the roles of both midwife and gadfly. In this way I endeavour to take up the mantle of that defender of my rights, both enumerated and un-. |
