Personal background
I'm an original Trekker currently living in Madison, Wisconsin (the state capitol). I'm a 52-year-old female who was a Network Design Engineer/Consultant from the beginning of the PC-Age. Before that, I was a COBOL & FORTRAN programmer - one of the few women in the field at the time. I am currently retired (on disability), but do all sorts of computer stuff parttime - just about anything having to do with a PC. I've lived here since 1993; prior to that, I lived in Alexandria, Virginia and worked for the government and/or government contractors with a Top Secret security clearance. I moved here because my son (DOB 6-11-70; only child) moved here with his companion. I have no other living family. I've always had an interest in science fiction and ETs, from a very early age. I grew up on a working farm in Western Pennsylvania, just north of Pittsburgh. As a kid (an only child, too), my Mom and I would lie outside in the grass on warm summer nights and study the stars & constellations. I had a lively imagination (& still do!), but it was my Mom who said one night, "You know, maybe there's another little girl on some other planet laying outside doing the same thing we are." Between that and watching the original Twilighgt Zone and Outer Limits as well as Trek, I was hooked for life. I am also a very spiritual person and firmly believe there is life elsewhere, due to a lifelong, ongoing study of many esoteric, spiritual and religious writings, belief systems, etc. We Are Not Alone! Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I firmly believe in the existence of abundant life elsewhere in the Universe. There is too much evidence FOR the fact. People have been recording the sighting of UFOs and the presence of ETs since the beginning of recorded history. It is only Man's arrogance that makes us think we are all there is. I think we will eventually make contact either through programs like SETI or an incontrovertable landing of a UFO in a very public place (like the Capitol Mall as in "The Day the Earth Stood Still). I am dead serious. The benefits would be unimaginable; the dangers - our own arrogance and the military's tendancy to shoot first and ask questions afterwards. I worked for many years surrounded by the military mindset; I know what high-ups think and how they would react to such a thing, even if it WOULD be useless. My feeling has always been that if ETs are intelligent enough to get here, we wouldn't stand a chance against them. They are God's creations just as we are; we were all meant to get along peaceably. I run SETI@home because I believe they're out there, perhaps waiting for us to answer them, proving we're ready for open contact. And we should send a beacon saying we ARE ready - and mean it.
