Profile: Jim Garasich

Personal background
I reside near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. My true love is astronomy. My interests also include ccd imaging, digital astro-imaging, and variable star observing. In fact, while attending at the University of Pittsburgh in the eighties, I was very fortunate to be given the exciting opportunity to be a part of the extra-solar planet searches conducted at the Allegheny Observatory in Pittsburgh. Steering and guiding that 30-inch Thaw Refracting Telescope, while the professional astronomers recorded the ccd data from the Multi-Channel-Astrometric-Photometer system, was, without a doubt, one of the most exciting things I've ever done. And it was real astronomy! Very exciting! It is a real pleasure and honor to have participated in the research. Maybe some of the star systems were found by some of the data I helpe to gather on those long nights at the telescope.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. To participate in another exciting research project leading to the discovery of Earth-like worlds, and perhaps, some extraterrestrials?

2. Listening for possible alien signals is arguably a fundamental way of answering the old question of whether or not we are alone in the universe. Plus it would be great to be an active participant in that effort.

3. Improve GPU usage configuration to further increase processing speed while keeping the laptop cooler to prevent its shut down.
