Profile: Jill Rawes

Personal background
I live in a small village in South Buckinghamshire, England. I started programming (main frames)in the sixties but got left behind when I took time out to raise my son. When I returned the desktop PC was in universal use and I had to start almost from scratch. My last job was with a company selling a psychometric testing system; I designed and maintained their Access database and advised generally on their computing requirements.

I retired from full time work in May 1999 at the age of 65 but could not settle to the quiet life. In October 1999 I started helping a local man who had just started up a new business as European agent for some American university presses. I reorganised his flat-file database and converted it to a relational one, and I have been with him ever since, working 8 hours a week. Just enough to keep my mind occupied and it forces me to keep up to date with computing matters. It was also a tremendous help to me when my husband died in 2002.

In my spare time I play lawn bowls and am treasurer to my local club. I enjoy gardening, reading, puzzles of any kind (but especially logic problems) and cooking. I love watching cricket and hope to go to Australia next year for the test matches. I have a very exuberant 3 year old chocolate labrador called Holly. She was my Christmas present to myself in 2002 and has been my constant companion ever since.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As a fan of science fiction since the age of 10 how could I not participate in something as exciting as looking for extraterrestrial life. There must be someone out there. The thought that it might be my computer that receives the first message is enough to keep me running the program.
