Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
To the first question 'Does extraterrestrial life exist', the answer is simply this.

"I don't know." If anyone else says differently, they are lying.

When and how will we discover ET life? I think this is definately the best way to do it, but possibly 20-50 years from now, when the technology has improved and we are able to detect virtually any radio signal, including ones as primitive as our own.

The benefits and dangers are both self evident, the danger being, the Aliens are like humans are... and decide to claim earth for their own.. benefits are naturally improved technology that could lead to many many possible outcomes.

2. Should we send a beacon... we already are.... daily... a stronger signal directed out to space? Why not, maybe an SOS, eheh.

3. Because its there.
