Personal background |
I'm just a retired EE with excess computer processing time on his hands. The SETI has been an interest of mine that goes back many years to a time as a young man when I read Heinlein and Clarke. I then came to believe that humankind was not alone in this vast universe. Now with the help of a homebuilt computer ( Athalon 1800XP with A7N266-C Socket A DDR motherboard, NVIDIA 415 chipset and 1 GIG of TwinBank DDR Memory Architecture I can knock out between 6 and 8 WU/day with the CLI driver running at low priority in the background. I've just recently added a fixed point wireless Ethernet connection that runs ~2.4Mbps.
I believe the SETI project is an expression of a basic desire in mankind to search for the unknown. May we never, ever lose that childlike gift.
Although I registered last year, I have just begun crunching WU's on July 21, 2002 at 17:42 MST |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. Yes
2. Not really
3. It helps me rationalize the need for all this computing power. ;-) I would be curious to see an in-depth analysis of the present computer code and what if any optimizations might be applied for better machine efficiency. |
