Personal background
I'm a 26 year old med student who loves astronomy. Every chance I get I go outside and look at the various objects in the sky through my telescope. I have always been fascinated with astronomy and with extraterrestrial life. It would be very exciting to see SETI find what we're all looking for and "know" is out there. Even if I'm not the one that finds it with my computer, I will still be very proud to have been a part of the Seti@home program.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I absolutely believe that extraterrestrial life exists. Beyond that, I believe that extraterrestrial intelligent life exists as well. I believe that humans are on the right track to finding it. Radio waves must exist in other intelligent civilizations. It is difficult to guess when we will find life elsewhere in the universe. I would be willing to say though, I'm 26, and we'll find it in my lifetime! There are benefits and dangers to any expedition. A common response to this may be finding an aggressive ET that will try to wipe us out and take over our planet. This I feel is somewhat irrational thinking. The greatest fear I would have is if found and somehow met with, the transmission of new diseases that will wipe us out. It would be much like the expansion of countries to the "New World" that wiped out many of the Native Americans via diseases that were foreign to the indigenous people. The benefits of such a discover are unfathomable. The sharing of technologies, resources, etc, would surely transpire. It may be irrational on my part to believe that such a discovery would unite people here on Earth like never before.

My understanding is that humans have already transmitted a beacon? Also the release of a satellite with pictures, recordings, and texts. I think the best way to communicate would be through radio waves or mathematics.

I run SETI@home to do my part in this great endeavor. I think the project is a great concept and will hopefully prove that everyone involved is not nuts! I have faith that the program will at least shed light on possible life if not blatantly prove its existence in our universe.
