Profile: Manuel Hohmann

Personal background
I'm a physics student from Hamburg, Germany. I started exploring this planet in the year 1984 just after my birth, but it took me some years to go beyond this scope and look for interesting things in our universe. After school I started studying physics (including astronomy and astrophysics) and I'm going to write my diploma thesis about string theory in a few months. Besides that, I'm a computer freak and operating system developer, a Star Trek fan (I speak a little Klingon) and a model train enthusiast. Some people say that I'm a freak because I use to put strange things into microwave ovens, turn my dorm into a computer farm and solve equations far into the night. If you share this opinion - you are absolutely right.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am convinced that there is extraterrestrial life, maybe not in our galaxy, but in some other galaxy for sure. If we ever discover them, the first evidence might be in the spectra of some planet's atmosphere, containing the essentials of life. If there is intelligent life out there, we might discover some signals they sent into space, most likely radio waves sent in a frequency range, where other civilizations are likely to find it. In my opinion we should also sent signals to other civilizations - if anyone receives it, it is up to them whether they decide to answer or not - or whatever else they are able to do with their technology. I would probably send a sequence of prime numbers ("This signal comes from a civilization."), the signals of some "nearby" pulsars (so they can determine our position - and especially the distance between our planets) and Beethoven's 9th symphony. If they have the possibility to visit us and they decide to do so, I would not hesitate to shake hands with them (if they have hands like ours). Of course they might not be friendly - but I would commit that risk. I think SETI@home is a great project because it is the best thing we can do to find out if we are really alone. Since I have more than one PC which are idle most of time, I decided to support this project - as a small contribution to a large community.
