Personal background
I live in a southern coastal state of the U.S. attending a local university as a freshman undergraduate physics major. My hobbies include assembly language programming and amateur chemistry, specifically operating system development and precursor extractions/systhesis, respectively. Yes it is possible to practice pure chemistry and not make drugs or explosives, counter the stereotype.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home simply to keep my computers busy. Even though they do use a bit more power when busy than idle, the amount of work done by the CPU is not proportional to the power taken by the system as a whole and as such is more energy efficient in that respect.

I have given much thought to SETI and alien civilizations, but I would probably run SETI regardless of how likely I thought it was that we'd would find anything. I really don't know if this project will find anything but I don't feel it is too likely. When it comes to me finding an authentic signal, that probability might as well be nought. Most of the credit for finding a signal should go to the software developers since all us users do is setup the client and leave it to chug along. The observable universe is much too large to not harbor other civilizations but they may not want to contact us yet, or through that method, or even at all. I believe in UFOs and grays, and most that comes with it, but I doubt they even use radio technology.

What I think would be amusing is if someone wrote a virus that distributed the client software so pretty much everyone would have to run it. Of course this hypothetical virus wouldn't be so forceful as to cause too much system damage or annoyances, not to mention that it would outright violate the SETI software's policy of use. It would ensure that the CPU/system temperature don't get too high and prevent the client from running while utilizing battery power (laptops).
