Profile: Parsec Six

Personal background
Hello. I'm Matt. 28 years old and from northeast Ohio. Needless to say, even though I consider myself an amateur astronomer, we have an overabundance of cloudy days here. I don't take my scope out nearly as much as I'd like. I love to travel. I was recently in Scotland and am heading to New York in a few weeks.

As far as my fascination with spaceflight and communications, I finally did something about it and attended the supposed day of Discovery's Return to Flight launch. Of course I missed it as they left a week later...but it was a hell of an experience to see her on the pad. They are up there right now, circling and working in that seemingly limitless emptiness.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@Home because, frankly...why not? I am fascinated with astronomy and flight. I look up there at those thousands of lights and imagine the light leaving millions of years ago. I try to comprehend the span of the universe. I find it unfathomable and ignorant to believe that we are the only life sources in the whole mess.

I began SETI here and there and recently got a computer that could handle the work units more easily. I am no computer engineer and realize that my measly time contribution doesn't really aid the project, especially when compared to the organizations and individuals with supercomputers. But I like to think it does. I like to think it's that small voice that will make the most lasting noise someday. I love listening to the simple radio signals they take from Saturn, the noise of the Mars lander entering the atmosphere (or at least the computer translation of it to sound). And I am amazed at the sound and sights the cameras on the SRB's caught during this last shuttle launch. We make a heck of lot of noise here on this planet. It would be nice to know someone hears it....and maybe we'll hear them.

As far as the project goes, I wish I could understand the math. I think it's a great project you have going, and well worth it.
