I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has ever tried contacting us. Anyway, I run SETI just in case I'm wrong. I don't know, maybe there isn't intelligent life beyond this rock and maybe there is a god who watches over us and does nothing. Knowing that life existed beyond our small particle in the universe would take society to a higher level. Proof would exist that we are a small part of a much larger picture.
