Personal background
BACKGROUND
In High School, I was fortunate enough to have a great "Basic Science" Teacher. His enthusiasm caught me, and held me for the rest of my life with a love for science, especially Astronomy. Justin Perticone will always be remembered as one of the great influences in my life. My first telescope was purchased shortly after graduation in 1960. It was a 2.4" Unitron Refractor, and I still have it after all of this time. I have other instruments, of course, but the nights under the stars with my Unitron were special. It will always be with me.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI THOUGHTS
1.) I cannot imagine a universe of such size and complexity being inhabited by one "intelligent" species. There are billions of billions of suns out there, and to think that we are alone is to me the height of conceit. Humans will become aware of other civilizations when our technology is up to the task. Until then, we must try to curb our hostile tendencies and let the future unfold. The benefit to humanity would be to find out at last, that we are not an accident. We are here because we are supposed to be here. Others are out there pondering the same questions that we are.
.
2.) The "Beacon" question is moot. We have been transmitting radio signals to space since the first signal in Morse Code was sent early in the last century. To direct a signal announcing our presence would be an effort in futility right now, since we don't have a clue as to where to direct it.
.
3.) I run SETI@home on my computer to take part in a massive experiment which could have a very profound affect on the way we view ourselves. I have heard people say that "No" is an answer, but in this case, I think they are wrong. The universe is so vast, that no answer is just that... no answer. We need to listen harder, with better equipment, for a longer time. The answer is out there!
