Profile: The.Hiltner.Family

Personal background
The.Hiltner.Family consists of: Michael David Hiltner (Age: 43)(the leader of the group for SETI@Home, Brandon Lee Hiltner (Age: 17)(2nd I/C running the fastest computer here), and Andrea Jeanne Hiltner (Age: 39).

We reside in Moose Jaw (POP: 46,500), Saskatchewan, Canada (which as local jokes go, is 12 feet from the Moose's ASS!)

Michael David Hiltner is an avid Radio Amateur / Experimentor. Callsigns include:

* VE5MDH (Home QTH DO70)
* VE5VHF (VHF Rover activating Grid Squares around DO70)
* VE5SIX (VHF Contest Callsign)

* ex-VE3VRQ (1st 6m VUCC (#970) worked in less than 3 months with only 10w & homemade 3ele Quad no higher than 6 feet off the deck at the boom! (QTH: FN13gx Middle of Lake Ontario!).

* ex-CF3VRQ Special Event Callsign on behalf of the 75th ANNIVERSARY of the Royal Canadian Air Force! Worked over 1,500 QSO's during May99 - Aug99! I even was able to act as a liason to recover a lost logbook for a P51 Mustang from KB4CRT, John way out in Florida! The complete logs were removed from a safe in Florida and handed over to the Royal Canadian Air Force Museum in Astra, Ontario (Home of 8Wing Trenton, ex CFB Trenton). The full and complete logset was scanned and archived while it was in my posession (less than 24 hours, and with ultimate delicate measures taken!). General Jeff Brace was estatic to say the least!

* I have also applied for and am waiting for my 2nd VUCC certificate for 6m for working CF3VRQ. Upon arrival, I shall be the ONLY Radio Amateur to have ever achieved working 2 VUCC's from the SAME location! (Yet another break through in Radio History!)

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My brother, VE3CNZ, Frank told me how he had set up SETI at his work place, as well as at home to work in his favour (he was the system administrator, which helps out, of course!). With the Amdahl's running full bore, he was just pumpping out the results! I was hooked right from the start.

Sure we were not getting the results that Frank was pumpping out on a daily basis, but we were all loaded up for the long haul! Well we've upgraded our Computer Control Room here in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. We now have 5 computers churning out units on the Hiltner.LAN:

700MHz Desktop (The heart of the Master)
2Gig Desktop (Brandon's Gaming & Kazza Machine)
2Gig Laptop (Mommy's Toy (good thing SETI max's her CPU out))
333MHz Desktop (SETI Devoted)
333MHz Laptop (HAM Radio logger, Graphics & SETI)

Now our 2,000th unit is in our window, as we sit at #1,611

Over the many months that we have been active, I have spread the word about SETI to fellow workers, HAM Radio Ops, neighbours and those who had the oppertunity to visit our family WebSite when it was operational in Ontario. Our present provider does not allow me any WebSpace. Shame on them, I say!
