Personal background
Recently retired from the U.S. Air Force after almost 27 years. Working in my second career as the Senior Acquisition analyst for a company in Marietta GA. Married and have 3 kids, one graduating from college in May 2002 (yippee!) and one just starting college here in GA (bummer). Youngest is a Freshman in High School. Been an amatuer astronomer when I got my first telescope at 12 years old. Avid science fiction fan and cut my teeth on Ray Bradbury books at a tender age.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist? I beleive so, it's just a matter of time until it's discovered, and hopefully it is recognizeable as a life form. I think ET will be discovered as so many other things have been; by accident. Possible benefits are that it could be a benign, intelligent life form that compliments the human race in the galaxy. It could also be a totally dangerous life form that views the human race as nothing more than an infection that needs curing.

Should we send a beacon?? I think not. Given the latter possibility mentioned above, it may not be wise to draw attention to ourselves. If we did, what kind of beacon should we use? Infrared? Microwave? ultraviolet? What frequencies or duration? Piggy back a signal on a carrier? What carrier do we choose? It's easy to assume parallel development and recognition of terran signals, but not practical since there are numerous possibilities for communications methods.

Besides, we may be alone. I'd rather wait for that seti signal to be identified and our ET neighbors to be investigated a bit before I sit down with them at a poker table ans show hands.

I run SETI@home because I think it's a great way to be involved in the continuing scientific exploration of the universe. Our destiny is the stars. We can't stay on this one speck of dirt forever. There's a lot waiting to be discovered!
