Personal background |
Right. I could ramble on for all 2000 characters here, but instead I'm going to do a quick summary to keep you from getting too bored. I'm a high school student from the UK, studying geography and history. I am a professionalish webmaster, and have experience in HTML, PHP, SQL, ASP, Perl, Java and just about anything else to do with the Internet. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Again, a quick summary:
1. Yes, extraterrestrial life exists. No, they are not likely to be wielding technology much more advanced than ours, they are unlikely to abduct anybody and the chances of them broadcasting a signal for us to look for are slim. However, we're likely to pick up the extraterrestrial equivalent of BBC 1. Benefits and dangers are likely to not be a problem, since the chances of us visiting each other are fairly slim given the distances involved.
2. Yeah, why not? To be kind why not broadcast sets of triplets, maybe extraterrestrials looking for intelligent life enjoy finding triplets in signals too?
3. I run SETI@home because the thought of processing power doing nothing at night (my PC runs 24/7) is offputting. I have SETI@home running on my W2K box and my Linux server, and it seems as good a use of them as wasting cycles. I suggest better support for people using multiple machines or processors, since my CPU time doesn't update properly. |
