Profile: Paul Eaton-Jones

Personal background
Hi folks. My name is Paul and I live in the U.K. where I work as a laboratory technician in a large secondary [high] school in Hull, a northern city on the East coast. I'm 51 and have been into astronomy since I was a small boy of six. The idea of extra-terrestrial live has fascinated me from around the same time. It will come as no surprise to learn that I'm a fan of science fiction - Mike Moorcock, Zelazny, Niven, Clarke, Banks - all the usual suspects. I'm also into space-rock music - Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles, Hillage. Good grief, I seem to have ticked all the boxes!! My partner treats me with an amused, gentle condescension as being a nurse she is used to dealing with hard facts and life and death situations so flights of fancy, as she sees it, in searching for E.T.I. is using time that could be better used. Ah well, one day we'll prove her wrong.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1). I run SETI@home so as to improve the project's chances of finding that elusive signal.

2). While I'd like to see either the U.N or the American federal government put money into the project to provide more and better equipment that could prove to be a two-edged sword because as we've seen all too often when budgets have to be cut it's always the 'far-out' projects that suffer. It's all too easy to a see a time when a central funding agency [governments] would take away the money and the project fold. The present way of donatations and scientists giving their time is probably the best solution - until such time as a definitive signal is found and the 'big boys' come in.
