Profile: Timo Haavisto

Personal background
Part-time web server administrator; part-time martial arts teacher. Full-time seti@home user (server runs 24h per day).

I'm from Finland, 24 years old, living in campus of university of turku.

It's nice idle power of home computers and servers are finally combined to gather really big number-crusher, but there are still many many servers running 24/7 with maximum of 10% processor usage. So, let's spread the word!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yeap, we can't be the only ones in the universe, whose planet happens to be in life-supporting zone. If we are here, there must be others as well. I think if alien contact is made, we can learn from each other...the only problem is the vast range: if they sent radio signals what reach world now, how far have they propably been evolved by now? Or better, have they already been vanished? Same problem for humans: if we send signal now (what would contain maths, alphabet, arts, music etc I think) when is it received if it is received at all? It takes time. I run seti@home just because of interest (and to get low-usage servers something to do) I do not wait to find anything, but still high score gaussians are interesting, aren't they?
