Personal background |
Work
I'm an IMS Support Specialist. IMS was the
database management system developed by IBM and Rockwell for the Apollo space
program. I've been doing IMS Support for the last 19 years.
At work I'm running SETI on an RS6K F50, a PC360 running SuSE 7.0 Linux and
my Win2K 833MHz workstation.
Home
One of my interests is my classic 1952 Citroën Traction Avant Light 15.
At home I'm running it on an old 133 PII running SuSE 7.0. I've got a home lan
with a 400MHz PII Aptiva, and a 800MHz PIII Netvista both run WinME but I'm not
running SETI on either of those machines. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. I hope there is. I would like to think that SETI is the way to find them.
I hope they are friendly and can share their technology with us (assuming they
have more advanced technology) and can cross the distances to reach us.
It would be awful to encounter the Vogons just as they are about to construct
a Hiperspace Bypass.
2. Yes. Send the Linux Kernel Source that shows how Humankind can co-operate
to create something that is useful. Give them a userid and password on AOL.COM
so they can logon when they arrive.
3. It doesn't cost me anything to run SETI. The four machines are powered up
24*365, you're just borrowing some of the spare capacity. I hope the project
succeeds, with one of my workunits as the ultimate proof of extra terrestrial
life.
Why not pursuade the Linux developers/distributors to include SETI@Home as
part of their standard install - ready to run. If you could do that with WinXP
you could increase the SETI@Home population by an order of magnitude. Microsoft
could simply slip it into your startup folder - if you do can you be sure to
use my account so I get the credit :-) |
