Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it's reasonable to assume that it does exist, considering the vastness
of the universe. It seems likely to me that if life occured here, in our solar
system, it's probably happened elsewhere as well.
I'm not sure about how/when/if we'll discover it, also because of the size of
the universe (given the time between the formation of the earth and us being
able to send and receive signals across vast distances, I think that the
likelihood of the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life decreases
in proportion to the distance between us and whereever said life is. The farther
away it is, the longer ago any signals would have to have been transmitted, and
the less time any alien life would have had to evolve and develop such
technology. (OK, so 4-odd billion years is a long time, but human life didn't
happen here for a long, long time :)
Also, there is the possibility that any intelligent life that does
exist doesn't communicate by means that seti@home would detect.
As for a beacon, I don't see why not, but I think determining what to put on it
would be difficult at best, since we'd have to consider what any non-human
intelligence would be more or less likely to understand. Once thats done, just a
simple "hey guys, whats up!" would do :-)
