Profile: Mike & Teresa Mancuso

Personal background
Mike is a 48 yr old software engineer. Teresa is a 34 yr old student majoring in lab science.

Our home computer is a Pentium 4, 1.7 ghz, 512 mb memory, executing Windows XP.

We like to have SETI@Home executing 100% (not wasting cycles with the screen saver) whenever it's not slowing us down doing some computer task.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do we believe there's life out there? Yes! Do we believe that this project will find it in our lifetime? Well, I wonder how many signals are emitted from our planet in the 1.42 ghz range, at any useful power level, that we would classify as from an intelligient source if we were to receive it? And the universe is so big! SETI is covering just a small percentage of signals from our own galaxy, and there are millions of galaxies. We believe there must be other intelligient life in the universe, likely even in our own galaxy, but the distances are so vast. We accept the likelihood that we will we not find intelligient life out there in our lifetime, and the possibility that we may never find it. But we have to try because it's like a lottery: The odds are extremely against any one person winning, but it is a certainty not to win if you don't enter.
