Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think, that extraterrestrial life exsists or exsisted or at least is going to exsist.

BUT:

I also do think, that we are NOT going to discover any lifeform that is still alive out there, nor will we find any traces of lifeforms that have exsisted.
In case we do: Well. Congratulations!

Sending out a beacon:

This beacon must be constructed to last for ever (otherwise no one will ever have a chance to find it), which might be hard to manage. It also should be VERY noisy. By noisy I mean that it sends out signals with large output in any known way to attract who ever is willing to find and grab it.

Outside the beacon there should be a sign reading DON´T PANIC, in alien language of course (or at least in a language that any alien lifeform would be abled to translate). Actually, I´m not abled to give a good advise on how to encode the sign. Binary perhaps? But as you know, there are 10 kind of people. Those who understand binary and those who don´t. Nevermind.

Into the beacon I would put a piece of very very fine art, that also is abled to last for ever, such as a metal plate with information about our solar system engraved in it. Or at least something else that can be called "decorativ" (Just in case those aliens know about the meaning of a museum).

I take part in the SETI program, because I like the idea of being part of a worldwide research projekt. Perhaps we are at least going to discover a new class of Stars...
