Personal background
I have been an amateur in astronomy for more than 20 years, my profession being a consultant in Anaesthesiology. At the moment I am working in Saudi Arabia whichj has magnificent night skies in summer and winter. However one needs a travel permit to go to the really dark, dark places. Which nobody tells you beforehand!

In the big cities like Riyadh there are astronomical societies but not in the place where I am working at the moment, which is Taif, in the Western Province, about 160 kilometers from Jeddah and 70 km from Mekka.

The local people are not in the least interested in the night skies however! So, at the end of the contract; back home to South Africa where I wrote weekend columns for various newspapers. So: homesick: !

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
This Seti project is absolutely essential to find out about extra-terrestrial forms of life in whatever form. I run Set@home because as many participants as possible are needed to come up with any statistically significant results, whether the conclusionwould be yes, or no: great numbers of participants are needed.
