Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
ET exists? Yes! but in what form is yet to be determined. We have been sending radio waves into the universe for at least 60 years. This is not long enough to get very far (60 light years). As the universe was created at the same time (Big Bang) that would give other civilizations the same time to evolve and we would not detect anything yet.
A beacon should send a simple binary pattern that would be different from any possible natural source. It does not necessarily need to mean anything. But you could atomic weight of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen or the entire periodic table. Another alternative would be prime numbers.
SETI@home and Astropulse are funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, and donations from SETI@home volunteers. AstroPulse is funded in part by the NSF through grant AST-0307956.
