Profile: Gabriel Ditu

Personal background
I was born in Bucharest Romania, on 13 June 1957. Today I live in Australia, and I work for EDS. I am interested in everything that the human mind has ever contemplated, unfortunately I do not have the time or the ability to do everything that wish to do. I am interested in astronomy, literature, photography, rock climbing, travelling, computers, foreign languages... and this is just to mention a few of my interests. Of course, I could be accused of superficiality, but, like a person that enjoys every type of food, so I enjoy getting involved in everything I can. Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? This is not a question to ask a SETI volunteer, of course they will answer yes. It is true, nobody knows for sure, yet how many things do we do in life without having a certitude. This is the way of progress, going towards a goal just because you think is right. I see only benefits in discovering another civilization. The chance that another civilization is as bad as us is slim. I am proud of the human achievements, but if we look behind us, or around us, today how many things can we be proud of? Proud of the billions of people starving, proud of achievements in medicine that are not for everybody even in the developed countries, proud of the state of the planet, or maybe proud of the wars that we are fighting against ourselves... We made heroes from tennis players, or football players, but how many people know about Carl Sagan? Yes. We should send a message for others to find. If not for other reasons, at least to say 'Hello'. I think SETI is a step forward for humanity in general. Like the Internet, it is something that makes us to act together, it teaches us that we can achieve a great deal just by making a small effort in the same direction. Even if we are not going to find an extraterrestrial message, SETI will remain in history as an achievement. I do not have suggestions, other than to keep the project running until we find something. I am not sure, that letting people associate together was a good idea. In everything we do, we try to compete with others. A country is not a better country because it has more computers, a group is not better than an individual just because it has processed more units. It is like the Olympic Games. Instead of being a universal gathering, it is more like a battlefield. If we want performance, we should compete against ourselves not against others...
