Personal background
I am a 37 year old Canadian slacker. I was born in a small remote northern town, and then moved around a fair bit growing up, and continued the habit after leaving "home" at 18. When people ask me where I'm from, I just say Canada, because that's as accurate as anything.

I studied History in college, focusing on the Middle Ages. I've only ever really dabbled in anything, except maybe writing, which is the one constant throughout my childhood to present. I fully intend to never have a "career", the thought of doing any one thing for a living for the rest of my life appals me.

I have always been interested in astronomy, owned a number of telescopes, and like to keep vaguely current with cosmology and astrophysics through Scientific American.

I used to run a small website (non-profit) showcasing short pieces of fiction at DriftersOasis where science fiction is well represented. I haven't updated it in several years, but keep it online as an archive.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I personally believe there is almost a 100% chance of extraterrestrial life, and somewhere around a 95% chance that there is intelligent extraterrestrial life.

To quote Douglas Adams: "Space is big. I mean REALLY big. You may think its a long way to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts compared to space." Given the vast number of stars, and presumably planets, out there, I think the odds of Earth being the only place where life, and eventually intelligent life, evolved, are ridiculously remote. What's possible once, is probable twice.

I run SETI@home for a number of reasons. First, its about the best shot we have of detecting an extraterrestrial radio signal, something that would fundamentally change the way we look at the universe, and our place in it. Two, from mathematics/computer science standpoint, the project is an important proof of concept in the field of distributed processing. And Three, my computer runs 24/7 anyway, it might as well do something useful.
