Profile: Chris Manvell

Personal background
Born in Clifton, Bristol, UK on 1942/06/29.

I am a graduate engineer working with underwater mobile acoustic systems; I also help maintain one of the mobile phone networks in the Highlands of Scotland (a job which offers stupendous views of the glorious Scottish Highlands).

I have had several hobbies; my first love being the French horn (classical music from duets to major symphonic works). Sadly this is no longer as where I live there is no regular group to play with.

Shortly after moving to Skye, I did most of the work in building an extension on my house (thereby doubling its size), an activity I never want to repeat!
I have been a Baha'i since 1990 (and am a member of the Baha'i SETI group) and my interests have shifted to working with computers, producing books, Websites, etc.

I am married with 3 kids, all of whom have now grown up and left home. My wife, Maggie, is a mixture of saint and angel - I am not an easy person to live with being bone idle and little help around the house.

I guess that just about sums it up!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am certain that we are not the only intelligant life in the universe, or even our own galaxy - a belief that I held long before becoming a Baha'i (the Baha'i Faith teaches that there IS life throughout the universe). My feelings are that even if we confirm that there is life out there, the distances and, therefore, timescales involved are so great that there cannot be any really meaningful interaction between us (pending a scientific breakthrough into the discover of bypassing space-time as we know it.

As for transmitting signals; well, why not? Though the power required would be pretty massive. As for what to transmit, there are many minds greater than mind and far more capable of coming up with something.

Why do I run SETI@home? Well, as I wrote above, why not? Someone's got to do it, and I get the satisfaction of being a member of a huge team all workign towards a single goal. (And I get a certificate every so often!)
