Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

I cannot imagine that we are the only sentient species in the universe. It is far too vast for such a thing to be possible. If sentience developed here, it must also have developed somewhere else.

I have no doubt that we will eventually make contact with another intelligent race somewhere in the cosmos. I suspect that will happen fairly soon. I think it will be the most profound event since the birth of Christ. Its most significant effect, I believe, will be to bring the various peoples of the Earth together in a way never dreamed possible. We will see that we are far more alike than we are different. The pipedreams of a united world will become reality.

The potential risk is just as great. All of our religious traditions are based on the concept that God created Man in his own image and likeness. There is currently little room for aliens in these dogmas. Once we have compelling proof that extraterrestial life exists, all of this goes up for grabs. At my most pessimistic, I see riots spanning the globe over this. I hope I am wrong.
