I have been a seti searcher for years.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, life does exist out there. There are too many other galaxies, solar systems, planets for there not to be life somewhere else.
2. I believe we should be looking for stars that are of roughly the same size, and age of our own. If life progression follows universally, a similar pattern as that of earth, then other stars that are like our sun should produce life that has evolved at a closely equal pace to our own. If we could concentrate our efforts on those stars, if they can be identified, our results could be surprising.
As Carl Sagan said, vastly superior life to our own may have just chosen not to communicate with us.
3. Benefits and dangers of such a discovery? It will finally answer the question of, are we alone? Otherwise, we will not receive any benefits nor dangers due to the sheer distances.
