Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that extraterrestrial life definitely exists. Just because something is intangible does not render it nonexistent. Anyone familiar with the Drake equation would readily observe that there is an extraordinary probability that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the Universe.
As to when humankind will "discover" extraterrestrial life; I believe when we as a planet have demonstrated sufficient maturity to the universe, it will be revealed to us. To think that Homo Sapiens is a superior life form only serves to reveal the ignorance and arrogance indigenous to the human species.
Whether we as a species should or should not transmit a beacon for others is an irrelevant argument, as we have been doing so since Reginald Fessenden made his broadcast from Brant Rock, Massachusetts on December 24, 1906. As to what we are sending, hopefully it would be received as a message of peace and goodwill. However, that is a dicey proposition at best. And we cannot undo what has been done. We also must consider that the probability is equal that any sentient life forms we encounter will be hostile rather than friendly. And we must be prepared as a planet to accept the consequences of our global outreach. . . whatever they may be.
