Profile: Wildfire

Personal background
Hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
Fond of Computers, Jeeps and Birds.... not too fond of lawn work. Haven't been able to figure out how to get the computer, Jeep or birds to do the lawn work. Maybe I need sheep?Seriously, I love tweaking computers and have married my love of burning computers to the ground with my admiration of science. I've been having a ball trying to pump out work units as quickly as possible. I'm about ready to drop the GUI for more speed, but I'm a little leary of doing that before going to BOINC.Well, I'm proud to be teaming with all of you science buffs out there, as we search for life in the outer reaches! Happy celestial pinging!!!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think that ET life is a mathematical certainty, however my jury is still out as to whether we will ever hook up. The size of the universe is a big enough challenge but when you throw the equally vast factor of time into the equation - finding two species that are at similar points in their evolution and physically close enough that they'll be in contact during their life cycle - is pretty insurmountable. Now, all that said, if you throw in random chance, I personally think (and hope) it will happen within the next 400 years.A "beacon" is a good idea, but what kind of beacon. Humans can percieve objects through out senses in less than 1% of the total spectrum of things (sight, taste, smell, touch, etc.). What makes us think that aliens will sense the same way we do? As for what we should send? I don't know. I'm pretty ashamed of most things that we humans do. I don't think I'd like to brag too loud. Maybe we send a picture of a smile.SETI@home is a great undertaking. I run the program because I'm a raging optimist. I understand Star Trek is simply a TV show, but I ache for the day when we will be at that level of personal development. I think projects like this are a sign that we will get there, so I contribute. To all my fellow SETI explorers... Live long and prosper!
