Personal background
There are roughly 80 to 100 billion stars in our galaxy alone -- out of 125 to 500 billlion galaxies in the Universe... (observed from Hubble, vs estimated, respectively)

To think that we are alone is ridiculous! But at the same time, the number of people on another planet that is on the same level of technology and evolution is very small, and the distances involved make it probable that, even if we did find a signal, chances are that either we received them far after their civilization maxed out or we would be too far from them for any sort of coherent communication, meaning that either our or their civilization would be gone before any meaningful communication could exist.

But that doesn't mean that we can't have a meaningful exchange of ideas. Our civilization (or theirs) may cease to exist between communications, but we MAY BE ABLE to learn from them, or them from us.

Because of the distances and the speed of light, our communication may be generational. Then again, it may be civilizational. Where will we be in 4,000 light-years? Where were we 4,000 years ago on our own planet? Hell, we can only say for sure what MIGHT have happened in the last 2,000 years -- and that is only for a select few.

(In the voice of Patrick Stewart):

If we have a CHANCE to at least know that there is someone else out there, I'm all too ready to have that experience. Even if we never meet, at least we can exchange ideas with others.

I know that there is someone out there. I'd at least like the chance to let them know that I'm here, and that I'm listening, and that I'm willing to let them know about me.
