Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that ET life exists. I believe there must even be intelligent ET life. I wouldn't venture to guess when we'll discover it but I hope that we have learned to get along with each other by the time we do discover ET life. The greatest danger to that discovery is the natural panic and polarization that will occur. Right now many we have not raised the standard of living, the educational levels, or the moral levels of our species in general for the discovery to be met (at least initially) with a high level of calm or maturity. Now as for possible benefits, I don't think there are any limits to the possible benefits. First, even if all we can do is listen we increase our awareness. In early childhood developement children learn about themselves by learning about others. This would be true of us as a species too. Aside from the changes and benefits in consciousness I believe there would be a significant number of scientific advatages simply because ET would have had different objectives, and therefore different avenues of scientific inquiry. I don't think a beacon should be a high priority right now. I think it is much more important for us to devote our resources to helping eachother. Why do I run SETI@home? I believe the search changes us. It changes me anyway. To think of another sentient species makes me feel more compassion for my fellow humans and it makes me less afraid for the fate of our species. I believe SETI will help me to become more prepared to make contact with aliens both outside myself and inside myself.
