Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Why do you run SETI@home?
I´m convinced that Space is what we´re heading for, and should be heading for, bearing Malthus in mind. I can imagine that his observation holds true for all successful lifeforms. (Successful in the biological, reproductive sense, anyway). Since I believe the galaxy to be filled with life, some races are bound to have reached the same conclusion and are actively progressing into Space. Knowing they´re actually THERE and trying to communicate with them must be the most gargantuan step any race can make in its history. The Seti@Home project tries to achieve this and better yet, at no additional cost whatsoever since all these CPU cycles are otherwise completely wasted.
And besides all that, I want to meet Zaphod (Trillian would be nice too, but don´t tell my wife).
aThoughts about ETI
Sure, they´re out there. If it happened here, it will happen everywhere.
Danger? Scientists believe the age of space to be some 15000 million years, 2 of which we´ve been around. There will be ETs out there with civilisations unimaginably advanced compared to ours. If they would be hostile, "Resistance is futile". I believe we will probably meet races on more or less (give or take a few million years of evolution) the same evolutionary level as we have. The really advanced races probably leave us be for the time being. Do bacteria know they´re being observed ? Chances are other races look onto us in a similar way.
Also, I believe actively reaching out in Space is really an evolutionary step for a race.
And if all this results in us being discovered, observed and disposed off, well then we were just not up to it, were we ? If we do it to the gorillas, why shouldn´t "They" do it to us? Darwin will love it.a |
