Personal background
My background? To tell the truth I have very little of it. The fact that I am only fifteen might contribute to that. Or the fact that I live in the middle-of-nowhere in a miniature village called Traverse City in Michigan with a measly population of 50,000 people. As if I did not have enough against me, I am currently (and have always been) unemployed (I wanted to get a job for the summer but my parents would not let me because of all the other activities I was already in).As for hobbies, that is a little more complex issue. If a hobby is defined as anything you do that you are not paid for or required to do, then everything I do is a hobby. Despite the fact that no one is apt to care, I will tell you anyway. I love computers. Despite the fact that I have and absolutely ancient Blueberry G3 iMac, I still struggle though life. The fact that I have a dial-up *shudders* connection though AOL (which is quite frankly the worst online service I have ever seen), severely hinders my life.In this 333MHz computer I manage to play various games like RiskII© and strategy games. I also like the prehistoric game Descent(the best game of all time- until Descent ][ that is). I especially like the genre of games that include Total Annihilation, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, Warcraft and Starcraft (most people who know anything about games know they are all the same). I love to make web pages and you can browse mine from "www.geocities.com/ctachme".
Besides computers I love science. I am of the personal opinion that the only occupation that matters is that of scientists and all others exist for the sole purpose of supporting them (at least in a perfect world that would be true). I am quite knowledge about Astronomy and Physics. I also find it really annoying when you know more about a subject then your teacher. I would explain my political views on this page, except I am afraid that they would disqualify my profile (not really but I just ran out of cha...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life certainly exists. In fact, intelligent life is probable, but it wont communicate with us. I say this because of panspermia of terrestrial origin seems incredibly probable. In Robert Zubrin's book Entering Space he points this out. He explains that meteorite impacts have hurled microorganisms (many of which are adapted for space) off the planet into space. There, with gravity assists and light pressure, they will eventually leave the solar system. While it might take hundreds of millions of years to arrive at their destination, they are adapted to wait. This means that for the past 3.8 billion years bacteria have been colonizing the galaxy. Some have suggested that extra terrestrials would be humanoid in form, but this is extremely improbable because of the extreme randomness of evolution. While bacteria might exist on other planets, each planet is apt to have a different environment. This different environment means that characteristics other than the humanoid form offers would be most advantageous. But that is not all. Even if anything did develop that did resemble humanity, the chances of contact are horrifyingly low. Two totally isolated societies probably are apt to have very little in common. Additionally, the farther one gains in technology the less of the chance that they will have anything in common with us. This is primarily because inventions are pretty much random insights into the universe building on each other. So a given civilization probably will not use radio waves to communicate (invisible rays that act like waves that can go though objects and travel at the speed of light?). Some might say that radio the best way to communicate, but truly we know so little about the universe there are other, if not better ways too. The reasons I use seti@home are one: why waste all the CPU time I am away from my computer and two: science is vastly underfunded and needs all the help it can get.
