Profile: John Wilson

Personal background
A founding father of the y2k bug - not necessarilly proud of it but it's been that long ago I started in the computer industry - actually probably years before that if any of you remember having to put dates into 3 packed unsigned bytes of data.

I am now 56, live outside Boston for the last year - transplanted from the Seattle area 1994-2000 and previously from the San Francisco area 1973-1994. I build things in my woodworking shop for the house and family from kids rocking whales to cabinetry. I spent almost 20 years as a firefighter and have been enjoying the life away from that as much as I enjoyed living that life. I work to keep myself busy and out of my wife's hair and to earn $$ for playing golf on my days and afternoons off.

My wife and I have 2 kids - and one very spoiled grandchild almost 4.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Always had a belief in ET's since I was a kid of about 5 and saw my first and only personally observed [what I still believe was a] UFO. From a distance - out a window - a long distance off but to this day a memorable experience.

I think the setiathome project is great and have both my home systems cranking away whenever the screensaver kicks in. I just wish ET would phone us!

Not only do I believe we should transmit a beacon I think we should SERIOUSLY explore outer space and develope the technology to harness the speed of a propulsion system necessary and capable for such exploration.
