Personal background
[Original:2003]
I am from England, am fast approaching forty (love those years with a zero)- hmm- [20130623: I hit 50 In March].

I currently do Security Management on the core Banking System- spans various platforms (IBM, AIX, LDAP and NT4) [20130623: UNiSYS was dropped- shame]

I am a programmer:- (QB/VB6/COBOL/C/C plusplus/Forth & Pascal) I sometimes write utilities to aid me and the team in our job (and I do document everything) [20130623: No longer have time to do this at home]

Love adventure/puzzle games, playing World of Warcraft way to many hours [20130623: Ever Quest was a good introduction to MMORPGs]

My earliest science fiction read at the age of 9 was "Islands In The Sky", by Arthur C Clarke- and of course became hooked on the whole Genre. One gem I must mention is "The Adolescence of P-1" by Thomas J Ryan- a story concerning A.I.

My favourite programs have always been the factual/science ones.. Tomorrows World on BBC1, and from my youth, COSMOS by Carl Sagan being most memerable.

In COSMOS is the story of the Arecibo Interstella Message sent on the 16th November 1974- a 73x23 'graphic' block- giving various information. How I racked my brains trying to figure a way of sending that message FASTER!

It was the memory of this message that prompted me joing this Seti@Home project.

One day.. just one day.. maybe...

Anyone concidered looking for pulsed gravity waves?
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Life appears too tenacious on Earth for it not to be elsewhere off planet. We need to either push signals FTL- or develop means of detecting such signals. Benefits and dangers could be perceived to be the same thing, for example:-
a) We are not alone in this Universe! (me, you? and the SETI project)
A very big question answered and a hell of a lot more raised.
Push to get off this planet?- (humanities gene pool is slopping around in one bucket)- lets endevour to go meet them.. [20130623: Who would have thought it.. "Black Smokers" source of life in the deep ocean]

b) We are NOT? alone in this Universe? (religious zealots)
Will they attack us? do they worship MY god? will they kill my enemies?
Don't go off planet- hide! wait for the next comet to hit to render us invisible! (gene pool is super heated). Do go off Planet! hunt them down and kill them- they are not us!

2. Yes! another beacon- sticking to 73x23 matrix, use 1,679 of them, form 3D 'images'. Thought of this years ago when pondering original AIM message. [think "Contact"]. Rudamentary maths base 10- maybe include Binary and Octal Equivalents, simple equations (not E=MC2 !, but A=B-C, B=A C, C=B-A). Give our Galaxy in simple picture form- then our co-ords in LYears from Galactic Center- new Unit Galactic League (GL) representing 1,000? 10,000? 100,000? LYears, gives a smaller 'rougher' number for our Co-Ords.

Station beacon far side of Moon- electromagnetic shadowing of junk from Earth- protects signal. Beacon TIGHTLY confined Hydrogen Absorption band- directed same part of Galaxy for year.

3. Suggestion- I remember reading how radio receivers linked together to form one 'BIG' dish. Remove 'clutter' from your receiver- either subtracting signals received from other dishes? (I suggest one close to Arecibo, and another 'pair' on opposite side of planet- pairs could disciminate 'local' site interferance) omni directional signals squashed? or process the information from both pairs using SETI program, extract &or *note* all signals that EXACTLY match in power and frequency. Re-run result back through the SETI program......
