Personal background |
I live in Vermont, where it would be no suprise to discover E.T.s living as
Vermonters. I am an electrical engineer. I scan the skies at night (which
involves looking at clouds more often than not) and flyfish by day. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
As Ellie Arroway said in *Contact*, if there isn't anyone else up there, it's
a big waste of space.
I run SETI@home for the same reason a lot of folks do: I like being able to
contribute to this project, even if it's in a small way. One of the interesting
things that can happen with a project of this sort is that you can find things
for which you weren't looking. In addition, this project shows the power of
individuals when they are grouped together; one snowflake doesn't account for
much, but look what happens when they band together?
Finally, the project is a masterpiece of distributed computing. Perhaps other
projects which need huge computing resources can take a cue from this one. |
