Personal background
Hi, im from Pensacola, Fl. Im 17 years old and i enjoy just about everything. I am currently a student and am preparing to attend college in 2003. My favorite hobbies are, track and field, cross country, Basketball, and (my favorite) Airsoft, and i hope to become a soldier in the US Army. I'm going to need to explain airsoft so that i dont get arrested for my picture. Airsoft is a wargame like paintball except that the guns are replicas of real firearms and they shoot lightweight plastic bb's instead of paint. So dont be alarmed by my picture its just of me in my element. I've been involved in SETI@Home since 1999 and am currently attempting to get my high school to use its idle computer time for SETI@home.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe ET does exist because it seems impossible that the huge universe we live in could be given to only one dominant species. I believe if we do discover them it will be by programs like SETI, we may get lucky enough to hear them from wherever they are far far away, or if they attempt to come to earth the dishes will more than likely pick them up before anything else does, unless they fly in front of the Hubble(thatd be an interesting picture).
Humans should transmit a beacon for others to find because if every other race in the universe is right around our level of intelligence they may be listening just like we are, and if they are more intelligent than we are it would let them know that we are actively searching. The human race should send, a table of the elements that is made of the forms of molecules, some kind of rosetta stone in which we relate things like star formations and galaxies to represent symbols, and directions as to where we are(or if we wanted to be paranoid we could send them to somewhere close by and figure out what their intentions are).
I run SETI@home with the knowledge that i am part of a global community of people working towards a goal in which every little bit helps. I believe this is very worthwhile and will one day help in humanities search to find out whether or not we are alone. One suggestion would be to try and advertise more, like sending out representatives or advertising on TV.
