Profile: Selket_and_Kia

Personal background
Mom (Selket) and daughter (Kia) team from Concord, California USA. Kia likes the movies E.T. and Contact. I'm more partial to Contact. :) At this point in time, Kia wants to be an astrobiologist/astrophysicist/astronaut, and wants to learn to speak whatever language extraterrestrial life-forms speak, if any.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Kia and I think extraterrestrial life exists, and that discovery will happen soon - probably in Kia's lifetime (she's almost 9 years old). On the beacon-transmission question, we're against, and here's why: many humans wouldn't harm a hair on an alien's head. There are many MORE humans who would push for control, exploitation, or even destruction of non-earthly beings. Now, there is a distinct probability that we will eventually encounter a civilization that is EXACTLY like us - roughly 20% benign friendlies, 80% dangerous jerks and loonies (including the ruling class). Thus, it would be better to know more about an extraterrestrial population before initiating contact. In addition, if they're just like us, and received a beacon from us, their entire society would most likely erupt into political/religious chaos overnight, and then WE'D be the "Freaks From Outer Space" ("Run for your LIVES!"). Ummm… do we REALLY want to give them such a horrible first impression? Maybe they know we're here already... after all, we ARE a noisy little planet... and they are just waiting until the majority of us are benign friendlies (yeah, that'll be a while). Right now, if Joe Alien walked up to Jeb from Flatbush and said "hello," poor Joe would get a face full of lead.
