Personal background
Howdy! My name is John Miceli and I am a Senior Programmer Analyst/DBA for ING Advisors Network. I work in Des Moines, Iowa, USA, but live in a small town about 25 miles away called Waukee. I have a wife and three children, ages 9,5, and 2 and they are my pride and joy. I spend about 12-15 hours a day in front of a computer in some capacity, work or play. I have been interested in SETI for many years but only recently became aware of SETI@Home. I now have four machines running it on my home network, and I should be bringing another dual processor Linux box up soon.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe there is more out there than what we have experienced. God's inspired Word (The Bible in case you're wondering) states 'other sheep I have that are not of this fold.' This however is taken out of context so shouldn't carry much weight. I think it is more likely that if more is out there, they will find us before we find them. As for risks or benefits, they may have the cure for cancer for us; their cure may also be to scour the planet clean. Who knows? I don't, so I'm not going to worry about it. I believe SETI has a definite purpose to serve and if my little bit of computer work can help, I'm more than happy to spend the electricity.
