Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
When I first read about SETI@home I couldn't wait to download it. Unfortunatly it wouldn't be avaliable for another few months at the time. I eventually did download it and I've used it as a screensaver ever since.
I believe that extraterrestrial life must exist (and if it doesn't then that's quite the waste of space out there). I don't know when or how humans will discover it, but it's only a matter of time before we do. When we do contact them we could stand to benifit from their technologies, however, if they are hostile towards us, we could be destroyed by them.
I think the idea of transmiting a beacon for others to find is a good one. We should send information about who we are, how are bodies are built, what we need to survive (water, oxygen, etc.), the compositon of our atmosphere and soil, some sort of information showing that we have powerful computer systems, and most importantly that we are peaceful and seek to learn from others.
I run the SETI@home program for a number of reasons. First, it's a really cool looking screensaver. Face it, little white dots zooming past you isn't all that interesting. Second, every little bit i do helps in the greater cause. I know that I am helping contribute, even if it's only a little. Third, for that slim chance that it's my computer that finds extraterrestrial life out there.
I think the idea of the SETI@home project is absolutly fantastic. Using all these computers to do more computing in just a year or two than the SETI computers could do in hundreds of thousands of years years is just incredible. It's great so see sooo many people getting involved and just helping to rack up the hours.
