Personal background
I'm in the United States Army. Basically I just joined SETI out of a whim, but am now setting up all of my old systems to run it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that life beyond this planet is possible, but I do not have alot of faith that we will find it in the near future. Of course I can always hope. I see the possible benefits to include perhaps an increased understanding of our universe and maybe a faster progression in the sciences. Of course given the "lag" we would experience between question and answer it is very likely that by the time we received any response we may have already developed our own answer. One of the other benefits is that we may contact a species that followed a different path than our own and we may be able to bring them up to own level and thereby increase the chances for faster progress if we ever developed a means to communicate at FTL speeds. The possible dangers of course are that we may make our self a target to a hostile species (if one exists and could actually make good on any threat). Once in contact with "aliens" we should probably limit ourself, and them, to cultural types of information specifically the arts. This information is most likely to retain some value over the time it would take to transmit and receive a message.
