Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
(1) Carl Sagan's statistical argument for the existence of extraterrestrial life is very powerful, but technological ability is rare even among species on earth, and discovery of non-technological life forms will probably require travel to the relevant site. (2) To me, the spiritual boon of knowing we are not alone, even if extraterrestrial amoebas turned out to be our only companions, would be more significant than any likely practical benefits. (3) What kind of beacon might we send? Well, anyone who can read a beacon can recognize the prime number sequence. (4) Why do I run SETI@home? Because the cost is minimal and the potential benefits are staggering. Everyone should. |
