Personal background
Hmmm. I'm 34. Graduated in applied math. Worked at a defense contractor for ~8 years. Worked at the SFI for ~1.5 years. Been involved in several start-ups and such. My reigning interest is in the disambiguation of the subject from the object across the sensory-motor boundary of individuals.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I don't happen to believe in ET Life, except possibly for the more robust kinds of microbial life. However, the endeavor is laudable and I support it if for no other reason than we must continue to measure, poke, and prod every reachable corner of the universe.

Should we transmit a beacon? No. We already transmit a pretty big one. The only purposeful outbound signals we should send are those designed to bring information directly back to us. The ETs will probably only help those who help themselves, should they exist. ;-)
