Personal background |
I am a Welshman living in Ohio, in his late-30's; a husband & a father of two rambunctious, but adorable young boys.
This current [as of 12/2010] machine is the fourth on which I have run SETI@Home, though I did take a break through the mid-2000s. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I think that somewhere out there life exists elsewhere, probably on numerous planets. Whether they are "reachable", travelling-wise, I don't know.
There's a sure-fire dichotomy in trying to find ETI, as all sci-fi fans can tell you! *lol*
On the one hand it will literally open up the universe for us when/if we do make contact, however I would say that we're still pretty primitive, technologically-wise, and so ripe for that conquest-style scenario sci-fi writers and filmakers have explored over the years!
We're already sending out beacons, of course, as every transmission ever sent out on a radio wave has eminated from Earth into the universe, letting ETI know we're here.
I run SETI@home just because, like the Lottery, even those with the smallest chance can be successful. The only thing I worry about, (though I hardly ever think about it), is what fame or infamy and other hassles, (MiB's!?), I would gain if I was the guy to find the signal.
I think this project, and others like it are a great way of utilising computing power and energy that would otherwise be wasted. My only suggestion is that there should be a number of servers for the project, each with a nice chunk of bandwidth. When I win the Lottery, I'll buy a couple for the project! ;) |
