Profile: Alan The Tailrace Hero

Personal background
Hi everyone! My real name is Alan. I picked up the nick name from my web site where I run a home recording studio. I am from Kent in the southeast of England. I have played in bands for about 30 years on and off which dates me I suppose. I'm 55 now and slowing down! Although recording music is still my favourite hobby, along with DIY, and building/upgrading my own computers. I drive a large truck for a living, for a well known food supermarket chain and I enjoy it. I am married to Helen, the love of my life, and we share another love, our beautiful Belgium Shepherd dog. Her name is Kim.
I have always been interested in 'what's out there' since about 1967 when I saw a UFO that I couldn't explain. I have not seen another since but it left an impression on me. We can't possibly be here in this vast universe alone. Can we? I am a big fan of Star Trek in all it's series and never tire of watching them.
I have a home built AMD 2000XP Athlon 1.67 GHz CPU running Windows XP with 768 Mb of RAM. My computer is now running SETI@home 24/7.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think that extraterrestrial life must exist. It would be quite arrogant of us to think that we could be the only life in the universe. Having said that, I don't think that we will discover it for another several hundred years. I don't believe we are ready for it yet. If it suddenly turned up, I think that certain governments would blast it away and ask questions later, which would be a shame because I believe that when it does happen, it will be of enormous benifit to us, not only for space travel, but for medical knowledge etc. I beleive that ET already knows about us and is perhaps among us, but not ready to show. We're far to volatile amongst ourselves.
I do think that we should transmit a beacon for others to find, but am at a loss as to what it should consist of. ET would not have a clue as to what they are looking at. A series of pictures I would guess may be the best solution. We already transmit all kinds of rubbish in the form of TV and radio signals. If they get hold of Eastenders, heaven help them!
I have only recently discovered this site (SETI@home) and It's quite exciting and a great idea to pool thousands of people together. I think it's a great project. Suggestions for improving it? I just think it needs to be advertised a lot more than it is at present. The more people that use their computer to search, the quicker we'll find it! Well done to all the team that coordinate this site!
