Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Of course there is extraterrestrial life, whether or not were going to find an RF signature of that life in the cosmos remains to be seen. Bacterium is without any doubt out there. I'm sure in the past there was intelligent life and I'm sure that in the future there will be, I hope we find signs of intelligent life in my life time. Is there any danger from other life forms? have you ever been bitten by a dog, ever touch poison ivy or poison oak, ever get the flu or have herpes, what about getting punched by another human, of course there is danger, shift your focus and ask if there is benefit? like correction of our own DNA from generations of mutations.
I don't think most people have a realistic understanding of the fraility of the human body or the distance of a single light year (5,865,696,000,000 miles? thats like driving on I-10 from Los Angeles CA. to Jacksonville FL. 1,955,232,000 in a single year, good luck! ), not to mention the size of our own galaxy. I don't think humans are anywhere near as smart as we like to believe we are.
