Profile: Greg Gilbert

Personal background
I am from Boston (MA), Fort Wayne (IN), Pittsburg (KS), Waco (TX), East Stroudsburg (PA), Columbia (SC), and currently Charleston (SC). All moves were academically related in some shape or form. I love Boston the best, but my wife will not move north of Maryland. We met in graduate school. I am a transplant biostatistician; avocationally I love to cook! I have three basset hounds, who along with my wife and child, are the loves of my life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think SETI is an extremely worthwhile project in state and federal environment of decreased emphasis of all types of research. The solution to the data processing problem is nothing short of brilliant! I do believe extraterrestrial life exists in a number of different forms. I think it is rather geocentric and egocentric to believe that we are the only ones in the universe. I am not sure why current thinking is "hung up" on a life form dependent on oxygen (such as is the focus for the search for life on Mars). I would love for public resources to be mustered to beam beacons into space. It is a travesty that this country (USA) no longer values basic research. We need to change to mind set of this country and begin focusing on basic research as well as re-establish the quest for manned space flight beyond the Earth's orbit. I also believe this would have substatial economic benefits. (The Saturn program returned $7 into the economy for every $1 invested).
