Personal background
I in my 50's and work as a construction manager.
Hobbies include: Astronomy & Cosmology, Computers, Photography, and riding my Harley.

This is my second round with SETI. I finished 340 WUs before I crashed and went off line on 8/2/02. By the time I got back on line I lost the credit and my account.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have always believed that extraterrestrial life exists. The universe is just to populated with stars and galaxies for us to be the only life in the universe. I probably share this point of view with most of you.

It would please me for us to discover some near neighbors in space, but that may not be statically viable. Chances are there is other nearby life, but just not as evolved to the point as life on Earth and thus "quiet". Technologically sophisticated societies may be far and few in between, but I’m sure they are out there. Even if there were only one such society on average per galaxy, that still includes a lot of life and developed societies throughout the universe. Especially considering that estimates range from 50 billion or more galaxies exist in the universe. My guess is that there are several such societies per galaxy or more. We may still have to narrow some of the parameters in Drake’s formula, or we might have to add others before we have a more accurate picture of how common life is out there. I rest assured, just from the numbers involved--life is out there!

I joined SETI@home, to help in the search that I’m sure will eventually lead to results. When that day comes, some may be surprised, others may wonder why it took so long, but all of us will know that we have a common link across the vastness of our universe. Instead of dropping us another notch from the center of the universe (thank you Copernicus), I believe it should be the cause of celebration and a tribute to the Creator. Go SETI!
